Process

This drawing is one of six exhibited in Poems for Independence at Braemar Gallery in 2025 as a series of visual 'poems for Indy' - a gentle way of personifying 'independence' and what it means to me.

The series shares a scaffold of line work that brings to mind sheet music or architectural working drawings, providing a recurring structure to experiment with text and gestural marks - in this case stacking landscapes that take on a kind of spinal image.

This particular work is about belonging and feeling at home - I've moved around a lot - about 27 times by my count - so home is about relationships, and connecting with place to find a sense of belonging.

I also realised my current home on Gundungurra and Darug Country in the Blue Mountains is the longest I've ever been in one place, and one house.
